REPORT ON THE 1ST GHANA ICT AWARDS 2007 - HELD AT THE COCONUT GROVE REGENCY HOTEL, RIDGE ON SATURDAY, 11TH AUGUST 2007

INTRODUCTION

Information and communication technologies, a prerequisite for effective governance has not only become an indispensable tool in improving the efficiency and quality of public service, but is also emerging as the key to growth and competitiveness in an increasingly globalized economy.

It is in this regard, that the Ministry of Communications in pursuing the government's vision for the ICT sector established an annual Ghana ICT Excellence Awards scheme in partnership with industry players and key stakeholders in the private sector.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Communications initiated the Award scheme, the first of its kind to promote the use of ICT in Ghana and to encourage best practice. The awards have been designed to recognize and reward individuals and organizations who have demonstrated excellence in promoting use of ICT and it is open to all Ghanaians, directly or indirectly engaged in the promotion of the use of telecommunication and ICT technologies.

OBJECTIVES OF THE AWARD

The main objectives of this Award Scheme are as follows:

  1. To evaluate and recognize standards of excellence in our quest for growth and development in the use of ICT in Ghana.
  2. To encourage public and private and institutions to use ICT for development in general and improved public/citizens services in particular.
  3. To motivate other stakeholders in effective utilization of ICT for citizens services.
  4. To ensure that ICT professionals are provided a benchmark for recognizing and validating outstanding contribution
